SaskTel Pioneers Celebrate the Season of Giving

SaskTel recognizes the ongoing work, dedication, and generosity of the SaskTel Pioneers. Part of the Telephone Pioneers of America, the SaskTel Pioneers have spent the last 74 years volunteering and assisting a variety of worthy causes throughout Saskatchewan.

Two of the programs that are near and dear to everyone this time of year are Christmas Wish Angels and Santa for Seniors. This year, recipients in Saskatoon, Regina, Moose Jaw, Yorkton, and Melfort will have an extra present under the tree thanks to the SaskTel Pioneers. In Moose Jaw, 101 children from six different schools, as well as 100 seniors in 4 different care homes, received a holiday gift. SaskTel Pioneers in Regina delivered 272 gifts to schools, and in Saskatoon the Pioneers filled 271 Wish Angel requests for care homes.

In an average year, the SaskTel Pioneers donate well over $200,000 and around 1 million dollars of in-kind donations and volunteer hours to numerous charities and projects. Regina Cancer Patient Lodge was gifted $20,000 this year for one of their patient rooms. Eleven different charities in Saskatoon received a total of $22,000 from their local Pioneer chapter. The Central Butte Community Day Care group received a contribution of $5,000 to assist in the start up of a daycare in that community, to name a few.

There are currently 1,232 active SaskTel employees and over 2,600 retired SaskTel employees across 12 clubs throughout the province that make up the Pioneers. Notable programs that the SaskTel Pioneers started in Saskatchewan include Hug-a-Bears, Heart Pillows, and Computers for Schools. These are just a few examples of volunteer grassroots projects that make a real and tangible difference in Saskatchewan communities.

“SaskTel has always embraced giving back to the communities we serve, whether it be through one of our numerous sponsorships, our employee groups, or the SaskTel Pioneers,” said Doug Burnett, SaskTel President and CEO. “We are more than just a service provider, and the acts of kindness this holiday season, and all throughout the year, truly show the SaskTel spirit and the dedication of current and retired employees, who give both their time and money year after year.”
