The digital future is ready to land in Mazara del Vallo. In fact, Open Fiber is about to create a telecommunications network entirely in optical fiber in the city, a cutting-edge infrastructure capable of ensuring citizens and businesses access to the web at unprecedented performances.
The latest generation network is built in FTTH (Fiber To The Home) mode, the only one capable of returning connection speeds of up to 1 Gigabit per second and latency of less than 5 milliseconds . A special agreement was stipulated between the company and the municipal administration of Mazara, a pact aimed at regulating the methods of technological innovation intervention.
The company led by the CEO Elisabetta Ripa has planned an investment of 5 million euros in the Sicilian city , own funds necessary for the wiring of about 15 thousand real estate units. The agreement was sealed by the commissioner Vincenzo Giacalone together with the exponents of Open Fiber Clara Distefano (regional manager Sicily), Dorotea Lo Greco (Institutional Affairs South Area) and Daniele Di Pietrantonio (field manager and responsible for the cabling works in the city).
The project outlined for Mazara, with the aim of limiting as much as possible the impact and any inconvenience to the community, provides for a large reuse of existing infrastructures. As in yards open throughout Italy, the excavation will be carried out anyway favoring innovative methodologies and low environmental impact Among these, the most used is the minitrench : the excavation of road, off 10 cm and depth from 35 to 50 cm, is filled together with the laying of the cables with pink cement mortar. After at least 30 days after this temporary restoration, the technical time necessary for the settling of the material, the intervention is defined with the scarification of the roadway concerned and the laying of hot asphalt. However, each phase is always the result of coordination between Open Fiber and the competent municipal offices. A total of 9 thousand kilometers of fiber optic cables will be laid , with works expected to be completed within 18 months from the start of construction sites.
" The path of innovation and digitization of our city continues - declares the councilor for innovation Vincenzo Giacalone - with this agreement our city will be equipped with an ultra-broadband network and also dedicated fiber connections will be created for 30 municipal buildings that so they can communicate with each other with very high performance. The Administration of the Mayor Salvatore Quinci is aiming to make our city increasingly Smart and in step with the challenges that the future presents us " .
"An ultra-broadband network - highlights Dorotea Lo Greco , Institutional Affairs Southern Area of Open Fiber - allows us to enable services that benefit the entire community, even more so in the face of the pandemic that has forced us all to reformulate lifestyles and production methods: smart working, telemedicine, teleworking, distance education, Industry 4.0, video surveillance, home automation. And much more to invent: it is no coincidence that digital infrastructures such as those created by Open Fiber are defined as “future proof” because they are able to support subsequent technological evolutions. Connectivity expressed at its highest standards represents, today more than ever, an essential right for every component of our society ".
Open Fiber is a wholesale only operator and does not sell fiber optic services directly to end users: all the telephone operators or Internet service providers concerned can access the network. Already in the coming months the citizens of Mazara del Vallo will be able to take advantage of the ultra-broadband: once the saleability of the services is open, those interested will only have to check the coverage of their address on the openfiber.it site, contact one of the operators available to choose your preferred rate plan and start surfing at high speed.
