MediaTek Plans Major Expansion for India Operations

MediaTek,  a Taiwan based fabless semiconductor company that provides system-on-chip solutions for wireless communications, HDTV, DVD and Blu-ray is set to expand its operations in India.

The global Chairman of MediaTek, M. K. Tsai and his team met the Minister for Communications and IT, Ravi Shankar Prasad in New Delhi and discussed their plans for India. MediaTek which is one of the largest chip-design companies in the world, is encouraged by the new investment friendly climate in India and initiatives like Digital India.

The MediaTek chairman shared his commitment to make technology more accessible for people. He was encouraged by the great market potential that India holds in the field of technology and high tech services. He informed the Minister that MediaTek is keen on expanding its presence in India.

The Minister shared with the Chairman the Digital India vision and how it has opened up new avenues and opportunities in the field of technology. Initiatives like Make in India and Smart Cities coupled with liberalization of defense manufacturing has created a great demand for technology solutions and hardware in India. This along with the young population, economical workforce and business friendly government has made India a great investment destination, Ravi Shanker Prasad added.

The Minister also shared the government’s vision to create more IT hubs in small towns. He shared with the Chairman, his vision of opening BPO centers in rural areas. This would propel the growth of India and bring prosperity to the lesser developed parts of India.

Taiwan based MediaTek has 25 offices worldwide and was the 4th largest IC designer worldwide in 2013. Since its founding in 1997, MediaTek has been creating chipset solutions for the global market. MediaTek also provides its customers with reference designs.

As far as India is concerned, the company is already powering smartphones coming from a number of Indian brands and has played a key role in terms of reducing the overall cost of the smartphones in India. With this announcement, this is like to grow even further.
