Following the success of the first developer challenge, Indosat Ooredoo and Snap Inc announced the second developer challenge as part of the Indosat Ooredoo Digital Camp (‘IDCamp’) Augmented Reality (AR) Creator program.
This year-long program was launched in February 2021 to empower Indonesian creatives to explore and maximize the power of AR while paving the way for Indonesians to access the ever-growing digital economy.

The first challenge, which began in April, focused on the festival of Ramadan and ran for four weeks. The Lensathon invited individuals to create eye-catching Lenses using Snap’s Lens Studio desktop app to celebrate the holy month. Over 2,000 Lenses were submitted, and 100 winners were awarded a prize of 2,500 points. With these points, winners can access additional study materials or exchange them for prizes. Winning lens designs included expressions using Indonesian patterns and symbols, comedy around local customs, and a celebration of Ramadan’s special moments. Tangkap THR and Makan Ketupat are two winning lenses created by 21-year-old Rizky Adi, a student of Informatics at Politeknik Negeri Jakarta, who has consequently become Indonesia’s first Creator in the Snap Lens Network.
With the Indonesian Independence Day coming up on August 17, the second challenge invites creatives to design lenses that celebrate the country’s 76th Independence Day. In line with the national theme of “Indonesia Tangguh, Indonesia Tumbuh,” this upcoming Lensathon will be an opportunity for participants to express their hope and vision for a resilient and thriving Indonesia amid the pandemic. Lenses will be evaluated based on criteria, including complexity, creativity, functionality, and engagement.
“With more than 500 participants on the first challenge, we know that young Indonesian developers and programmers are getting more and more excited to explore the power of AR technology. The blend of the physical and digital offers tech enthusiasts and artists a new playing field to showcase their creativity. AR also offers a more immersive way for people to interact and engage with others in this increasingly digital world. In commemorating Independence Day, we hope this challenge could become a medium for young creatives to express their hopes and aspirations in advancing Indonesia as a digital nation,” said Ritesh Kumar Singh, Chief Commercial Officer of Indosat Ooredoo.
“With over 2,000 lenses created, we are thrilled with the engagement we saw for the first challenge,” said Anubhav Nayyar, Director of Market Development SEA, Snap, “We created Lens Studio because we wanted to empower our community to bring their imagination to life and it’s great to have a partner in Indosat who shares this vision. We’re excited to see all the lenses people create and share in celebrating Indonesian National Day.”
