At its very first Mi Pop event in India, China based technology company Xiaomi has announced that it is making its first foray into virtual reality (VR) in India with Mi VR Play, its VR headset priced at INR 999.

It also announced that it is launching Mi Live in India, its very own live streaming app with locally sourced content.

Mi Pop is a unique event created by Xiaomi to bring Mi Fans from across the country for a day to engage with, and celebrate with Xiaomi executives. The company has been organising Mi Pop events since 2012.

In India, Mi Pop was live streamed in VR for Mi fans via Mi Community on Facebook, YouTube and Mi Live. In less than four months since its launch, Mi Community has now crossed half a million users organically.

Mi VR Play: Virtually anything is possible

Xiaomi’s vision to bring innovation to everyone has disrupted many industries and introduced a range of high-quality products to millions of people. In the same way, Mi VR Play is an entry-level product that seeks to bring the VR experience to a much wider audience. By opening up an exciting new way for users to experience their smartphones, Mi VR Play is set to make a huge impact in India where VR is still in its infancy.

Mi VR Play has significantly improved upon the design typically used in similar VR products — it is wrapped in lightweight, durable Lycra for long-lasting comfort. The unique two-way zipper helps to ensure compatibility, providing a secure grip on a wide range of 4.7- to 5.7-inch smartphones. At the same time, the dual openings on the front allow for slight positioning adjustments and ventilation.

Mi VR Play is certified to work with Google Cardboard apps. It will be available exclusively on Mi.com and offline channels at INR 999 starting 21 December from 12 p.m. onwards during Mi India’s Christmas sale.

Mi Live: Live every moment

Mi Live is India’s first live streaming app with locally sourced content that caters to all hosts by providing every individual a chance to show their talents. It was announced today that Mi Live would also support a new VR feature, which allows users to view VR content in the app and goes live today in India and China. Mi Live is the only live streaming app in India to support VR live streaming.

As a highly addictive and fun app, Mi Live has the potential to appeal to a wide range of young, tech-savvy Internet users and is a clear example of the range of Internet services in MIUI that Xiaomi is building in India.
