PDF is one of the most popular document formats in the world that was developed by Adobe in the 90s and the intention behind the creation of such a file format was to create a unique format that can be displayed and opened across different devices in the same way.ยท
You might have heard of various benefits of PDFs such as their security, universality, consistency, inter-conversion, etc but what about its drawbacks because everything that has some advantages also has some disadvantages or drawbacks too. So, for this purpose, we will be discussing various drawbacks and disadvantages of using PDF over other document formats:
Difficult To Edit
The first major drawback of using a PDF is that it is not directly possible to edit your PDF for free. To be able to edit PDFs, you would need to have paid software such as Adobe Acrobat or any other PDF editor that has the editing function. This is one of the major disadvantages of using a PDF because without editing, corrections cannot be made easily and it usually delays all the important tasks.
For this reason, people prefer to use other documents such as Word for editing and creating their documents and then if required then convert Word to PDF using numerous free online PDF converters such as Lua PDF Converter.
Not Mobile-Friendly
Although the fixed layout of PDF documents is very useful and handy in some cases, when it comes to mobile phones then PDFs are not mobile-friendly. Most of us now prefer to use our mobile phones to perform any sort of task, be it viewing a PDF file and the fixed layout of PDFs makes it difficult to use the mobile devices because you have to constantly zoom in and zoom out & navigate around the document.ยท
This is a problem for many people who hate this thing and prefer to use any other document format than using a PDF. Even if they have a document in PDF form, they would rather convert that PDF to Word than go through the hassle of looking at a document that doesn't even fit their screens.ยท
Website Incompatibility
PDFs also have this problem of website compatibility because these are not always integrated into Web pages and to be able to view the document directly on the web page, the user needs to have Adobe Reader or any other such plug-in installed in their browser, otherwise, they won't be able to view the PDF.
If a user does not have any plug-in related to PDF installed then the PDF file will be downloaded and the user will be asked to view the file in a separate application, this is something that you wouldn't have to face with a word document but then again, the layout of word documents vary from device to device, which disturbs the whole layout and formatting of the document.
Different PDF Types
Since PDF documents are interconvertible, there are basically two different types of PDF files that are available; Native & Scanned. A native PDF document is the one that can be created by converting it directly from any other format such as Word, Excel, PPT, while a scanned PDF document is the one that has been created by scanning a real-life paper document to produce an image of that document in the PDF form.
When it comes to usability, flexibility, and ease to work with documents, then Native PDFs are more flexible to work with because they are created by the conversion of an already created electronic file into PDF whereas Scanned PDFs are limited in their flexibility and usability.
Copying Text Can Be Difficult Sometimes
Copying text and other elements from PDFs can also be difficult because most of the time, a PDF is read like an image and it is usually done for e-books so that readers cannot copy the text for personal use and this is a great step to eliminate piracy but still, it can cause problems for people. In addition to that, the layout of a document created in the form of a PDF is fixed and you cannot change it once it has been created.
These were some of the drawbacks and disadvantages of using PDFs as compared to other document formats out there but if we compare and weigh the advantages against disadvantages then obviously, the advantages of PDF outnumber its disadvantages and this article is just for people who want to find out about potential disadvantages of using PDFs.
