Vivo V5s: First Impressions – smartphone with selfie magic

Vivo is a Chinese smartphone brand, but it has surely won Indian hearts with its unique branding strategy and larger than life presence in the offline channel space.

The company has been working very hard towards ensuring that all its handsets come with an innovation driven surprise package for its customers.  In line with selfie focused approach, Vivo has just launched its V5s in the Indian market. This smartphone is priced at INR 18,990.

This handset comes with more storage and redesigned antenna bands, and a new matte black colour variant. Here are the first impressions that we got while using this handset for a few days.

Design and Build

The new Vivo V5s comes with a similar 5.5-inch display and faux-metal back. Vivo V5s comes with antenna lines, which are now around the top and bottom edges rather than running across the back panel. It also comes in matte black variant, which looks extraordinarily great and will probably be more in demand.

Apart from that, there are no other changes from its predecessor. The dimensions and the overall look and feel of the handset is quite similar to the V5.

This handset comes with a 2.5D curved glass covering the display, a capacitive home button with a fingerprint scanner which is embedded inside. There is the front camera above the display, couple of sensors and the front LED flash.

While the SIM tray is placed on the left edge, its volume and power buttons are placed on the right edge and its microUSB port, headphone jack and loudspeaker are placed at the bottom.

It comes with 5.5-inch IPS LCD panel which has a 1280×720 pixel resolution. This display is good enough to deliver great color detail and provide wonderful experience to its users. It delivers vivid colors and, when we took some pictures we could see quite well balanced sharpness and color intensity.

Chipset, storage and RAM

Vivo has not changed much on the chipset side, it comes with the same MediaTek MT6750 SoC which has an octa-core processor clocked at 1.5 GHz paired to a Mali-T860MP2 GPU.

There is also 4 GB of RAM which can be quite handy for multitasking capabilities. And yes, the most interesting part is that in this handset, Vivo has increased the internal storage from 32 GB to 64 GB and you still get an option of expanding the storage further using a microSD card of up to 256 GB in size. While using this handset for some days now – we have put this to a lot of multi tasking capabilities and so far it has come off with flying colors.

OS and software

Vivo V5s comes with Android 6.0 Marshmallow. This device comes packed with Vivo’s very own FunTouch 3.0 UI. And going with the current Cricketing – mood of the country – this UI also comes with themes including an IPL one. The handset also has a set of pre-loaded apps as well. The OS runs pretty smooth as we did not experience any sort of lag while reviewing this handset.

Vivo V5s comes with a 13 MP rear camera with an LED flash and phase detection auto-focus. On the other hand, at the front there is a 20 MP selfie camera with a soft LED flash.

The quality and performance of the both the cameras are the same as on the V5. This is a ‘super selfie’ handset. Its selfies look really good. You can play with the settings to make your face clearer and brighter as well. all in all, this is a great handset that delivers cool selfies and provides good value for money.

Battery and connectivity

The battery on Vivo V5s comes with 3,000 mAh power with support for fast charging as well. This is good enough to last for one day of heavy multi tasking oriented usage.

As far as connectivity is concerned, you get 4G LTE support with dual-SIM cards, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth v4.0, GPS, OTG support, microUSB 2.0 and a 3.5 mm audio jack.

Final Conclusion

With its great selfie and refreshing design elements – Vivo V5s is a good device at this price point that comes packed with power as well as performance. This will surely impress you if you a selfie lover.
