Swisscom and AWS have decided to further intensify their cooperation model. Swisscom will substantially expand its established AWS practice over the next years and invest in the education and training of technical and commercial employees.

This reinforces Swisscom’s intention to serve the needs of Swiss customers even better – whether they are migrating existing on-premise applications, managing a hybrid infrastructure or developing entirely new cloud-native solutions.

With the launch of the AWS Europe (Zurich) Region coming in the second half of the year 2022, Swiss customers will have additional cloud usage options with data storage in Switzerland, which Swisscom is very pleased about, and which will provide an additional innovation boost to further increase Swiss competitiveness.

Swisscom offers a proven cloud consulting approach supplemented with a broad portfolio of value-added services. These services include migrations (e.g. SAP on AWS), application modernisation, cloud analytics, contact centre and IoT solutions. Swisscom managed services ensure the comprehensive operation of the customer’s cloud infrastructure by providing local service desk, enterprise connectivity services, workload and security operations.

Increased cooperation

“This collaboration will combine the full innovation power of AWS with Swisscom’s comprehensive portfolio of ICT services and local roots,” said Urs Lehner, Head of Business Customers at Swisscom. “Our joint offerings will be the catalyst that gives Swiss companies a technological edge, especially in highly regulated industries. The experience gained from our own migration to AWS allows us to pass on this expertise to our customers to support them with their cloud transformation.”

Yvonne Bettkober, General Manager Switzerland and Austria, Amazon Web Services, added, “We are delighted to expand our strategic relationship with Swisscom to support Swiss companies accelerate the adoption of cloud solutions as well as develop innovative new services and products. The new AWS Europe (Zurich) Region will add momentum to our collaboration and help customers take full advantage of the cloud. By combining Swisscom’s own transformation experiences with the breadth and depth of AWS cloud capabilities, Swiss customers will benefit from the highest level of cloud expertise and support to migrate mission-critical workloads to AWS, accelerate the modernisation of their technology landscape and monetise their data using AWS machine learning and analytics services.”

Experience from Swisscom’s own AWS migration

Swisscom is transitioning to a cloud-native approach. As part of this, in 2021 Swisscom selected AWS as its preferred cloud provider for its own enterprise IT. Swisscom is pursuing a cloud-first strategy and is using AWS to increase IT flexibility, improve operational efficiency and accelerate time to market for new features and services.

The migration to AWS is part of Swisscom’s transformation from a telco to a technology company. Currently, Swisscom is working with pilot applications to gain experience for the bigger steps to come.

The AWS Landing Zone, which helps customers more quickly set up a secure, multi-account AWS environment based on AWS best practices, is available in its first version and is currently being tested extensively.

It is also important to integrate the AWS Cloud seamlessly into Swisscom’s process landscape, while building rigorous governance. Through its internal Cloud Mastery Transformation Programme, Swisscom is investing heavily in developing the cloud skills and mindset of its employees in line with its goal to develop applications in a cloud-native way.
