CenturyLink, Inc. was selected by the state of California Governor’s Office of Emergency Service to help enable emergency call management solutions to modernize Southern California’s 911 system to a Next Generation (NG) 911 platform. CenturyLink is the only public safety network provider selected for this project.
CenturyLink Public Safety Solutions are powered by the CenturyLink Tier 1 MPLS network. This public safety grade network links together NG911 routing intelligence, public safety applications, management, and related services.
“In a smartphone-connected world, it’s essential that our public safety capabilities keep pace with the technology people are using every day,” said Cal OES Director Mark Ghilarducci. “Today marks a significant milestone in updating our 911 network to better support dispatchers, emergency responders and to ultimately save lives.”
“The CenturyLink network will enhance emergency number services to enable a faster, more resilient system for Southern California,” said Sonia Ramsey, regional vice president, CenturyLink. “The system will allow residents to contact 911 from anywhere, at any time and from most devices. We look forward to working in collaboration with the state of California to provide a hybrid solution and digital technology enabling the seamless transition to a Next Generation 911 system.”
The unique NG 911 solution CenturyLink designed for the state of California meets national standards established by the National Emergency Number Association and can be used as a model for the future of NG 911 systems throughout the country.
CenturyLink is providing an emergency service IP network, IP-based software services and applications as well as core call routing services as part of Southern California’s digital transformation to the NG 911 system.
This enhanced system will enable reliable and secure communication between the public and 911 centers helping provide first responders with the information they need to quickly assist with emergencies. Additionally, CenturyLink’s architecture will position the state of California to take advantage of the benefits of the NG 911 system that will evolve over time. This project is expected to be completed by late 2020.
