Speed Wars: Airtel Pips Jio, Vodafone in TRAI’s 4G Test

It is an all out war when it comes to delivering 4G speeds to customers and Airtel has pipped Reliance Jio and Vodafone to come out as the winner, according to TRAI’s (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) latest speed test held in 10 cities across India.

The speed test done by TRAI shows Airtel with an average download speed of 9.64 Mbps, Jio’s 4G download speed of 6.57 Mbps, Idea Cellular with an average download speed of 7.41 Mbps and Vodafone an average speed of 10.5 Mbps. The test report confirms that Airtel’s average download speed is almost 44 per cent faster than Jio’s.

The tests were conducted in total 10 cities including Bhiwani in Haryana, Kota in Rajasthan and Calicut in Kerala.

The speeds recorded in this independent 4G drive test are lower than the results shown by speed testing apps. Jio shows 20.3 Mbps as its average download speed in MySpeed app while Airtel records at 8.9 and Idea at 8.2 Mbps.

The Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) were assessed for the networks of all telecom service providers operating in the region. KPIs for voice services were Coverage; Call Setup Success Rate; Drop Call Rate; Block Call Rate, Handover Success Rate; Rx Quality. KPIs for data services were Download and Upload Throughputs, Web Browsing Delay, Video Streaming Delay and Latency.

The drive test in the city of Indore LSA was conducted for a period of 5 days during 9th to 13th October 2017. It covered a route of approximately 600 KMs and data tests conducted on 5 hotspots. Cellular mobile telephone service providers included namely Airtel, BSNL, Idea, RCOM, Tata, Tata (CDMA), Vodafone and Jio. Tests included 2G, 3G, 4G and CDMA radio access technologies.

The drive test in the city of Nagpur  LSA was conducted for a period of 5 days during 20th to 24th November 2017. It covered a route of approximately 630 KMs and data tests conducted on 10 hotspots.

The drive test in the city of Mysore LSA was conducted for a period of 3 days during 26th to 28th December 2017. It covered a route of approximately 320 KMs and data tests conducted on 10 hotspots.

The drive test in the city of Bhubaneshwar LSA was conducted for a period of 5 days during 26th to 30th December 2017. It covered a route of approximately 624 KMs and data tests conducted on 5 hotspots.
