You may have heard of terms like MiFi, travel routers, portable routers, and pocket routers and may be wondering what these are. Well, all four are just different names for the same device—the MiFi.
What is a MiFi?
A MiFi is a portable hotspot. It has a built-in modem and it acts as a Wi-Fi router, letting you access the Internet on other devices. While originally the term was used by Novatel Wireless for its portable devices, now almost all companies have started calling such devices as MiFi.
- Pros
- You can access the Internet on-the-go even in places where there are weak network signals.
- This device saves you from a drained phone battery, which may occur if you had to access network at 4G speeds on your smartphone.
- Cons
- The ease of using such devices may eat up your data before you realize it and prove to be costly.
- The higher the number of devices connected onto the MiFi, the slower the Internet connectivity will be.
MiFi vs. Dongles
There are two main differences between the MiFi and the traditional mobile broadband dongles. Firstly, a dongle can only connect to one device at a time while a MiFi can connect to multiple devices at a single time. Secondly, you have to plug the dongle into the device you want to connect to the Internet. This may prove to be an issue for mobile phones and tablets. In the case of the MiFi, all you need to do is keep it someplace where you will get a strong signal and connect your devices to it.
