NEC Corporation of Malaysia has launched its transportation solutions, as part of NEC’s public safety innovative offerings.
As one of the leading ICT providers, NEC has the capability to implement cutting-edge solutions to manage key infrastructure, such as railways, bus networks and highways, which is aimed at making every commuter’s journey safer and smoother, whether travelling by train (i.e. Mass Rapid Transit, Light Rail Transit, Commuter Train & Monorail), bus, or in the comfort of their own vehicles on highways.
NEC’s suite of transportation solutions is able to integrate multiple technologies, such as railways and buses, together with a common ticket or fare card system to serve all systems. This common ticketing system enables commuters to transfer from one mode to the other easily.
As a full turnkey provider of transport solutions, NEC is able to design, build and commission rail and bus systems, with a proven track record of collaborations with local partners and authorities worldwide.
NEC’s advanced transportation technologies for railways, buses and highways offers intelligent solutions in station-and-train-borne communication systems, bus telematics systems and transportation control systems respectively to enhance the service excellence of the operator, making the rides safer and more efficient for passengers and drivers.
To allow commuters to plan their journeys better, another critical part of the solution is the passenger information system on display panels at the bus or MRT stations which allows commuters to know the estimated arrival times of the next service, and understand the routes easily. This data can be accessed online or on-the-go via mobile applications.
“Malaysia’s economic progress and rapid urbanization has brought about a need for a more efficient and reliable system to create a sustainable transport system to support the growth of the city. Security and safety are two key areas that concern authorities, especially with the daily movement of thousands of passengers and vehicles throughout the network. With our proven expertise and know-how in the area of transportation and public safety solutions, NEC Corporation of Malaysia is committed to deliver a quality and seamlessly integrated transport system, which will provide a safer and more efficient mode of transport to the Malaysian public,” said Andrew Lee, Managing Director, NEC Corporation of Malaysia.
Solution for Highway
For highway users, NEC’s transportation control system distributes information on road conditions, including vehicle passenger information from road traffic measurement sensors (traffic counters), weather information from weather sensors, videos from traffic CCTV surveillance cameras, and emergency telephone and cell phone calls from highway users.
During traffic jams, the CCTV surveillance cameras detect the situation and the information is analyzed at the command centre and then displayed on the highway information board or through FM radio broadcast to alert drivers to use different routes. As a result, traffic is diverted around ‘hot spots,’ which reduces traffic congestion along the affected routes.
Solution for Bus
NEC’s bus intelligent system leverages on telematics and fleet management systems built into the IT infrastructure to enhance bus service excellence and operations. Powered by NEC’s telematics system, eco-drive sensors monitor and analyze driving behavior and indicate when a bus driver accelerates or decelerates quickly, or changes lane abruptly, and provides visual cues for bus drivers to adjust their driving speed.
The bus performance data is transmitted from each bus to a real-time centralised tracking software solution monitored at the bus depot command centre via Global Positioning System (GPS). The data collected is also used to identify high-risk driving behavior, so as to improve passenger safety.
The NEC fleet management system manages the operations and monitors bus location data via GPS and dead reckoning algorithms which provide real-time bus tracking and help in the distribution of buses, which would tackle the issue of bunching – where two or more buses serving the same route arrive at the same bus stop at the same time. During such situations, a signal is sent to the command centre to adjust the bus schedules.
Solution for Railways
NEC’s railway solution consists of a station-and-train-borne communication system which performs several interface functions, including Train-borne Public Address, Passenger Information System, Passenger Emergency Communication, CCTV, Alarm and Status Management and backup systems.
To combat the rise in terror attacks on public transport networks, the NEC system also manages on-train security which allows authorities to improve security and communications on mass transit systems.
