Huawei has unveiled the construction of its Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) Open Lab to global operators and partners. The NFV Open Lab aims at stimulating innovation, industry development and collaborative benefits for global telecom networks supporting NFV/Software Defined Networking (SDN) and cloud-computing technologies.
The NFV Open Labs will bring an environment that will help ensure that NFV solutions and carrier grade infrastructure are compatible with emerging NFV standards and with the Open Platform NFV source (OPNFV). The NFV Open Lab is composed of three labs, located in China, Germany and the USA.
Huawei’s NFV Open Lab focus on the integration of telecom NFV/SDN and cloud technologies, testing, technical showcases and certifications for the emerging NFV industry. With this NFV Open Lab announcement, Huawei commits to being an active partner in this undertaking, working with the global NFV industry in order to provide the best services for the global telecommunication industry in the coming new era.
NFV represents one of the core strategies for the future of Huawei’s network architecture. From Huawei’s perspective, the main added values from NFV are that it will break the isolation of traditional telecommunications networks, shorten innovation cycles, reduce operating costs and create an open industry chain, which requires processes for open standardization and open source cloud technology.
In November 2012, NFV technologies Open standard was built by ETSI NFV ISG 1.0. As an important part of the OPNFV NFV 2.0, the open source community will focus on the establishment of an integrated carrier-grade, open-source reference platform. As an initial platinum member of the OPNFV and a member of ETSI NFV ISG, Huawei believes the successful operation of OPNFV technology will develop its market and commercialization, thereby establishing the NFV solution industry chain based on open standards and open source software solutions.
One important task for the OPNFV is to ensure device consistency, performance and interoperability. Leveraging the extensive experience in virtualization technology for telecommunications, Huawei can help advance the pace of the industry by providing integration and innovation lab services for global operators and partners via these newly formed NFV Labs.
Based on the OPNFV, these services cover integration and verification, interoperable operational testing and certifications. Additionally, OPNFV certification services will cover the cross-layer and multi-vendor equipment interworking, functions, interface verification, equipment, services scalability and performance verification. Huawei openly welcomes global operators, partners and industry colleagues to take part in these OPNFV Labs and discuss general requirements, tools and methodology that will best benefit all participants.
OPNFV was formally established on September 30, 2014. The initial members include 17 platinum and 22 silver members, including mainstream operators and vendors. Huawei is an OPNFV platinum member, and also a member of Board of Directors and Technical Committee (TSC).
Huawei participated in the establishment of OPNFV and has jointly contributed to the creation of the OPNFV White Paper. Aside from being an OPNFV Platinum member, Huawei is also a gold member of the OpenStack open source projects. Huawei actively participates and contributes tirelessly in many global open source communities and projects.
