A major step forward to improving connectivity on trains. The FS Italiane Group, TIM as the lead company, Iliad, Vodafone and WINDTRE have completed installation of the 4G mobile radio system covering the line and tunnels on the High Speed Bologna-Florence section according to the set timetable.
4G upgrading work was completed last July on the tunnels between Milan and Bologna. Activation of the new system ensures complete coverage of the Milan-Florence HS line.
The technical checks required will be carried out by TIM and RFI (FS Italiane Group) and the other Operators in the coming weeks. In addition to upgrading the telecommunication systems, the work also included boosting the capacity of the line’s power supply equipment.
Work on implementing 4G technology will continue in 2023 on the Florence to Rome and Naples sections and, as per the timetable, on the Turin to Milan and Bologna to Venice lines. The aim is to provide more reliable voice and data connectivity on high speed lines, in order to guarantee a high-quality service for passengers on HS trains.
The FS Group’s goal is then to extend these operations to conventional lines as well, starting with the busiest routes, for the benefit of passengers on Intercity and Regional trains and freight railway companies.
4G technology provides passengers with a stable and high quality connection even in the most unfavourable areas, such as railway tunnels, through both the on-board WiFi service and direct coverage provided by all the TLC Operators participating in the project.
