EE has switched on 5G in 14 new cities and towns across the UK, as independent tests from RootMetrics reveal it has the best performing 5G network, with the most coverage, in London, Birmingham and Cardiff.
EE launched with 5G coverage in London, Edinburgh, Belfast, Cardiff, Birmingham and Manchester, and has expanded 5G on a daily basis. Today, EE has added 5G to Castlereagh, Guildford, Hamilton, Harlow, Hoddesdon, Kimberley, Lisburn, Maidstone, Sydenham, Watford and Wolverhampton, and has switched on its first 5G sites in Liverpool, Glasgow and Huddersfield to bring the best mobile experience to more places.
As well as covering new cities and large towns, EE has also brought 5G to more high footfall places, including Bristol Parkway, Cardiff Castle, and London’s Carnaby Street and Camden Market.
EE switched on the UK’s first 5G network in May 2019. Since then, EE has focused on connecting some of the UK’s busiest places to 5G, and has built 5G coverage across more than 60% of London.
According to the latest 5G testing by RootMetrics, in London, Birmingham and Cardiff, EE’s 5G network achieved the highest average download speed and 5G availability. RootMetrics’ ‘availability’ measure shows how often devices connected to 5G during download testing across each city.
•5G availability in London – 60.6% vs Vodafone’s 21.7%
•5G availability in Cardiff – 43.4% vs Vodafone’s 14%
•5G availability in Birmingham – 51.6% vs Vodafone’s 10.8%
Three quarters of tests in London, on either 4G or 5G, achieved speeds of 50+Mbps, and 60% saw speeds higher than 100+Mbps.
Marc Allera, CEO of BT’s consumer division, said: “Switching on 5G in more places is helping us deliver the best mobile experience to our customers, keeping them connected to the things that matter most. RootMetrics’ early 5G testing shows that we are a long way ahead in terms of 5G performance, and our engineers are continuing to build new sites every day, on our journey to keeping our customers connected 100% of the time.”
EE has 5G in more places in the UK than other network, and is targeting 5G connectivity in 45 cities and large towns by the end of the year. Customers can enjoy 5G in the following cities and large towns today:
