Thousands of homes and businesses in Luton can now access faster and more reliable internet services thanks to progress made by CityFibre, the UK’s largest independent full fibre platform.
In Luton and Dunstable alone, CityFibre is investing £45m to make them two of the world’s best digitally connected communities.
This latest milestone sees thousands of homes in Luton, where the network rollout started, gain access to the best available digital connectivity. This includes premises in Stopsley, Wigmore, Round Green and Crawley, where residents can access lightning-fast broadband services from UK launch partner Vodafone, on selected Vodafone Pro Broadband, as well as a wide range of other internet service providers including Giganet, Air Broadband, Zybre, Yazi, No-one, IDNet, A&A, Octaplus, Link Broadband and Facto.
As part of the network rollout, CityFibre will be working closely with Luton Council, to carry out pre works and exploratory surveying in the town centre. These works will help survey the future of the build and ensure minimum impact to residents and businesses moving into 2023.
The build will continue across the town throughout 2023, with Dunstable’s rollout scheduled to get underway early next year. Once the town-wide rollout reaches completion in 2024, almost every home and business locally will have access to full fibre services from a choice of internet service providers.
Jean Gowin, CityFibre’s Area Manager for Luton said: “We’re delighted by the progress being made in Luton – it’s fantastic that thousands of residents can already access the best available digital connectivity and enjoy the fastest and most reliable broadband services.
“As our network rollout moves into new areas of the town, we will continue to work closely with the council to minimise any disruption to residents. We ask residents to bear with us and assure them that any short-term disruption will pay off tremendously in the long-term.”
Unlike copper-based ‘fibre broadband’ services available today, full fibre networks use 100% fibre optic cables to carry data at lightning speed all the way from the home to the point of connection. This gives users consistently faster speeds for upload and download (up to 1,000 Mbps), near limitless bandwidth, so that everyone at home can work, study, stream or game simultaneously, while providing connectivity people can depend on.
Construction is being delivered by Instalcom on behalf of CityFibre. The team is using a range of construction methods while working in close partnership with Luton Council and local communities to deliver a fast rollout while managing potential disruption.
As the network rollout is completed in each neighbourhood, CityFibre will designate the homes ‘ready for service’, which means residents can choose to connect to full fibre-enabled broadband services when they go live in their area.
