TIM confirms its leading position in innovation and the development of new generation networks and services, and after its implementation last March of FTTH (Fiber To The Home) connectivity of up to 10 Gigabits per second it reached another important Italian record, resulting in a technological jump for ultrabroadband on FTTH fibre optic at 25GS-PON, capable of reaching download speeds of up to 25 Gbps.
The test was carried out in TIM’s laboratories in Turin, in collaboration with Nokia, using the equipment (Optical Line Terminator, OLT) already adopted in active exchanges.
A mix of GPON, XGS-PON and 25GS-PON technologies were used simultaneously during the tests. In particular, both the bandwidth capacity of the 25GS-PON system and co-existence on the same optical fibre with the other technologies already developed, GPON (download capacity of up to 2.5Gbps) and XGS-PON (capacity of up to 10Gbps), were tested with positive results.
This co-existence attribute means 25GS-PON can be introduced on the same optical fibre passive infrastructure used for the current GPON and XGS-PON 10 Gbps technologies.
The new connection based on 25GS-PON technology makes the best possible use of the physical characteristics of optical fibre, multiplying the capacity of the current FTTH GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Networks) network by 10 times in download and the FTTH XGS-PON one by 2.5 times.
25GS-PON technology will therefore be able to provide higher speeds and connection capacity, above all allowing businesses, industrial districts and the Public Administration to meet the ever increasing demand for connectivity to support the country’s digitisation.
