TIM brings 10 gigabits/second FTTH on TV with 'AMICI'

The TV programme is the first in Italy to use superfast XGS-PON technology. In Rome, Turin and Genoa customers on the TIM network can already test this important technological innovation

TIM has confirmed its leading role in the innovation and development of new generation networks and services, activating the first ultrabroadband optical fibre FTTH (Fibre To The Home) connections with a speed of up to 10 gigabits per second.

The first case in Italy to use this technology is ‘Amici’ television studio which, from tomorrow, will test the exceptionally high speed in front of millions of viewers. The new solution has been achieved through the adoption of XGS-PON network technology which, in symmetrical mode, i.e. download (from network to customer) and upload (from customer to network), allows speeds of up to 10 Gigabits per second.

After an initial test, from tomorrow TIM will give its customers and other operators (wholesale) the possibility to test the service on its network and for the first time in Italy, in the cities of Rome, Turin and Genoa.

The connection based on XGS-PON technology, developed by TIM in collaboration with Nokia, makes the best possible use of the physical characteristics of optical fibre, multiplying the capacity of the current FTTH GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Networks) network 4 times in download and 8 times in upload.

Thanks to the adoption of this technology, TIM will further expand its range of solutions to satisfy the growing demand for connectivity.
