Telia Estonia has become the country’s first telecom operator to equip nearly a quarter of its mobile masts with solar parks. The nationwide roll-out will enable tens of thousands of customers to use mobile services powered by environmentally friendly energy, while further boosting the resilience of Telia’s infrastructure.
Mihkel Kõiv, Telia Estonia Network Manager: “Our solar parks can generate approximately 1.5 gigawatt-hours of electricity a year. To put that into perspective – if an electric vehicle consumes 15 kilowatt-hours every 100 kilometers, the energy we produce could power 10 million kilometers of driving.”
Telia Estonia drives ahead with solar-powered mobile networks
Built and operated by renewable energy developer Sunly under a 15-year contract, the solar parks range from 10 to 20 kilowatts in capacity and are located across Estonia. The next phase of the project will focus on expanding smart energy management and storage solutions to maximize usage of the energy captured.
In all markets, Telia’s networks have run on 100% renewable energy since 2020. Increasing the share of solar creates a more diverse mix of energy sources, which in turn improves both flexibility and resilience.
On a Group level, Telia is committed to reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040, with absolute emissions from own operations already reduced 80% since 2018 (scope 1 and 2). In addition, Telia’s services can accelerate the digitalization of businesses and societies, which can in turn support a net-zero economy.
