Enea and Liberty Costa Rica has announced exceptional results from their partnership, in which the deployment of the Enea Adaptive Messaging Firewall enabled Liberty to eliminate 99 percent of SMS spam within just three weeks. The rapid decline in fraudulent traffic has significantly improved subscriber safety, a key measure for preserving trust in mobile messaging across Liberty’s network.
Intelligence‑Driven Filtering Stops Fraud at Scale
Like in many countries, cybercrime is a serious and growing problem in Costa Rica. Phishing scams have become more sophisticated, often carried out by organized crime groups. Liberty, like other mobile network operators in the region, has been experiencing a sharp rise in spam and fraud attempts, including banking scams, delivery scams, giveaway schemes, and aggressive gambling promotions.

This has led to complaints from subscribers and from overseas networks that received some of the spam that was sent through their networks.
Committed to protecting its subscribers and services from attacks, Liberty has deployed Enea’s Adaptive Messaging Firewall, supported by Enea’s threat intelligence services. In the first weeks after deployment, Liberty and Enea had accomplished:
Identification and deterrence of spammers abusing Liberty’s network, leading to a 99 percent reduction in spam passing through its services.
Identification and blocking of over 30,000 newly registered scam domains used for short‑lived spam bursts.
Continuous adaptation to quickly changing sender behaviour, ensuring filters remained effective even as spammers shifted tactics.
“Cybercrime, fraud and regulatory pressure across Latin America have never been higher” said Osvaldo Aldao, Chief Technology Officer at Enea. “We are pleased to work with Liberty to improve user safety. The results demonstrate how intelligence-driven protection can rapidly and significantly reduce abuse, even when adversaries are actively attempting to evade detection.”
“Protecting our subscribers is a top priority, and Enea’s expertise in messaging security has been instrumental in ensuring a clean and trusted messaging service,” said Daniel Vidaurre, VAS & Roaming Manager at Liberty Costa Rica. “The results speak for themselves, and we are extremely satisfied with the positive impact of Enea’s firewall.”
In summary, the Adaptive Messaging Firewall, supported by Enea’s threat intelligence services, has delivered immediate improvements to the user experience and helped Liberty stay ahead of tightening regulatory expectations.
