Cumucore, a provider of 5G Private Mobile Network core solutions, announce its participation in the 5G Alliance for Connected Industries and Automation (5G-ACIA) Industrial event in Helsinki.

Together with Qualcomm, Node-H and DNA part of Telenor group, Cumucore presents a groundbreaking live demonstration of generalized Precision Time Protocol (gPTP) synchronization over 5G.

This marks as a major milestone on the path toward full end-to-end Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) integration for industrial automation. The gPTP over 5G demonstration brings research and industry one step closer to realizing fully converged IT and OT networks using mobile technology.

The demonstration shows precise time synchronization, which is fundamental to TSN-based automation mobile networks, can be reliably achieved over a 5G Standalone (SA) private network. This capability is critical for enabling deterministic communication and real-time control in use cases such as smart manufacturing, robotics, and autonomous systems.

“This demo showcases that 5G has matured to the point where it can support industrial-grade timing and synchronization requirements” said Jose Costa-Requena, CEO at Cumucore. “It is a significant step towards making 5G a true enabler of Industry 4.0”.

“Reliable time synchronization over wireless 5G networks is one of the major demands we are getting from the industrial automation market” said Daniel Scheike-Momberg, Principal Engineer at Qualcomm. “5G TSN is a critical enabler addressing accurately synchronized wireless control systems in Industry 4.0. By combining our latest 5G Industrial IoT modem platforms with Cumucore’s TSN-capable 5G core, we’re demonstrating Qualcomm’s strong dedication to providing the market with crucial technology solutions that enable the convergence of 5G and Industry 4.0”.

“This demo is a great example of how 5G technology is evolving to meet the precision and reliability needs of industrial automation” said Mike Cronin, CEO at Node-H. “By enabling gPTP synchronization over 5G, we’re helping to close the gap between wireless and wired networks in factory settings. Today we are demonstrating that real-time, deterministic communication is achievable over cellular”.

“We’re excited to support this important step forward in industrial 5G use cases”, said Jarkko Laari, VP Networks at DNA. “Providing spectrum for this demo highlights how mobile operators can play a critical role in enabling advanced features like TSN over 5G. We believe that partnerships like this accelerate the adoption of private networks and help unlock the full potential of 5G in industrial environments.”
