Ericsson has been selected by XL Axiata to modernize its transport network with 5G-ready routers over the next three years in Indonesia.

The new IP Mobile Backhaul transformation project will see the implementation of Router 6000 hardware, software and customer support. This will prepare XL Axiata’s network for future 5G requirements and support the significant increase in the number of connected devices and data traffic on the network. The rollout will start Q2 2019 and strengthens Ericsson’s partnership with XL Axiata.

Yessie D. Yosetya, Director, XL Axiata, says: “We are looking forward to continuing our partnership with Ericsson with state of the art transmission equipment. We believe this will increase our network capacity performance and also beneficial for our customers to deliver a good user experience. This is one of our initiatives into the 5G era.”

Jerry Soper, Head of Ericsson Indonesia, says: “We are committed to support XL Axiata by building the highest quality network that provides an outstanding user experience. The transport network needs to be 5G ready for the smooth evolution of the network to 5G and we are delighted to partner XL Axiata for the same.”

Increasing video usage is the main driver behind the growth in mobile data traffic. According to the Ericsson Mobility Report November 2018 edition, video traffic in mobile networks is forecast to grow by around 35 percent annually through 2024 to account for 74 percent of all mobile data traffic globally. Mobile video traffic continues to grow, driven by increased viewing time, online embedded video and streaming services, plus the evolution toward higher resolutions.

All the sites selected to be modernized will have a Router 6000 which is optimized for 10/100G connectivity, high throughput, low latency and best in class buffering. With Router 6000, the network will also have IPsec capability for enhanced security and high accuracy internal clock for best performance. All these means the network will be ready for 5G.

Ericsson Router 6000 series is a radio integrated, service provider SDN enabled IP transport portfolio managed by a single end-to-end management system. It delivers high-performance connectivity for LTE, LTE-Advanced, and 5G applications
