Vivo V5s Review | TelecomDrive.com

Vivo, a Chinese smartphone brand, has just launched its latest smartphone – the Vivo V5s in India.

Over the past couple of years, Vivo is able to create a unique market positioning by paying attention to great detail in terms of enabling visibility availability of its products all across the country. The company has done this by aptly associating itself with mega events such as the Indian Premier League and most importantly by appointing the right channel partners in big and small cities across the country.

In line with selfie driven approach, Vivo has launched its V5s in the Indian market. This smartphone is priced at INR 18,990.
Compared with its predecessor, this handset comes with bigger storage and redesigned antenna bands, and a new matte black colour variant. Here is our review of the handset after using it for more than two weeks.

Design and Build

The new Vivo V5s comes with a similar 5.5-inch display and faux-metal back. Vivo V5s comes with antenna lines, which are now around the top and bottom edges rather than running across the back panel. It also comes in matte black variant, which looks extraordinarily great and will probably be more in demand.

Apart from that, there are no other changes from its predecessor. The dimensions and the overall look and feel of the handset is quite similar to V5.

This handset comes with a 2.5D curved glass covering the display, a capacitive home button with a fingerprint scanner which is embedded inside. This has its front camera above the display, couple of sensors and the front LED flash.
This handset’s SIM tray is placed on the left edge, its volume and power buttons are placed on the right edge and its microUSB port, headphone jack and loudspeaker are placed at the bottom. While using the handset – we felt that it is quite easy to hold and use.

Display

It comes with 5.5-inch IPS LCD panel which has a 1280×720 pixel resolution. This display is good enough to deliver great color detail and provide wonderful experience to its users.
It delivers vivid colors and, when we took some pictures in natural light as well as indoor shots - we could see quite well balanced sharpness and color intensity.
Chipset, storage and RAM

Vivo has not changed much on the chipset side, it comes with the same MediaTek MT6750 SoC which has an octa-core processor clocked at 1.5 GHz paired to a Mali-T860MP2 GPU.
It also has 4 GB of RAM which can be quite handy for multitasking capabilities. And yes, the most interesting part is that in this handset, Vivo has increased the internal storage from 32 GB to 64 GB and you still get an option of expanding the storage further using a microSD card of up to 256 GB in size.

While using this handset for more than two weeks now - we have put this to a lot of multi tasking capabilities and so far it has come off with flying colors and delivered great results.

Software

Vivo V5s comes with Android 6.0 Marshmallow. This device comes packed with Vivo’s very own FunTouch 3.0 UI. And going with the current Cricketing - mood of the country - this UI also comes with themes including an IPL one. The handset also has a set of pre-loaded apps as well. The OS runs pretty smooth as we did not experience any sort of lag while reviewing this handset.

Camera Performance

Without any doubt, the biggest positive about this smartphone is its 20-megapixel front camera, which does quite well in different photographic scenarios.

This is a great selfie smartphone – and selfies taken in low light conditions or with sufficient light manage to show good amount of detail and wonderful colors. For those who are into selfies, there's also a group selfie mode that lets you take panoramic shots – that can cover large group of people.

On the rear side, its 13-megapixel is also quite good and is quick with focusing, and manages to capture good detailed shots. It you are keeping the HDR mode on – it can prevent images from getting overexposed in harsh lighting conditions. While we reviewed this, the macro and landscape shots taken with the Vivo V5s also proved to be quite decent.

And when we compare - the quality and performance of the both the cameras are the same as on the V5. This is a ‘super selfie’ handset. Its selfies look really good and cool. One can easily play with the settings to make face clearer and brighter as well. All in all, this is a great handset that delivers cool selfies and provides good value for money in this price point.

Battery and connectivity

The battery on Vivo V5s comes with 3,000 mAh power with support for fast charging as well. This is good enough to last for one day of heavy multi tasking oriented usage.

As far as connectivity is concerned, you get 4G LTE support with dual-SIM cards, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth v4.0, GPS, OTG support, microUSB 2.0 and a 3.5 mm audio jack.

Final Conclusion

After becoming quite popular in India, Vivo is coming out with products, exactly what its customers want. This is a step forward in realizing that strategy. With its great selfie and refreshing design elements - Vivo V5s is a good device at this price point that delivers a power packed performance.
