Sprint has announced that devices on its Curiosity IoT platform will now be able to use local SIM profiles in addition to its current permanent roaming capability in over 130 countries.

Collaborative technology from Sprint and fellow Softbank Company, Arm, provides the Curiosity platform with eUICC capability for instant switching of SIM profiles over the air. This is useful when the devices move to different markets worldwide.

"Although Curiosity IoT was created in the U.S., it was always designed to be the most optimal global IoT operating environment," said Ivo Rook, senior vice president, IoT & product development for Sprint. "Our work with our colleagues at Arm, System Integrators and other mobile network operators has resulted in the ability for devices to have multiple options abroad. This means devices can easily roam across markets worldwide or localize in markets to support a specific use case or where regulations do not allow for permanent roaming. Customers will have complete control over profiles and configuration, with extra confidence in the most secure IoT connections possible – from the SIM level to the cloud."

International roaming with local profiles on Curiosity™ will begin as early as the first half of 2019. This will initially be available in 20 countries and then expand to include local profiles in 50 countries by end of the year.

Curiosity IoT, which includes a dedicated, distributed and virtualized core, built together with an operating system, is now the standard in how IoT is managed worldwide. Enabling IoT at scale requires flexible, yet secure deployment capabilities. Arm® Kigen™ SIM solutions enable secure eUICC remote SIM provisioning on Curiosity while a growing list of relationships with the other mobile operators who have eUICC capability gives Curiosity customers an alternative to permanent roaming.

"Cellular IoT deployment is gathering pace, offering the security, flexibility and reliability required for a truly scalable IoT," said Paul Williamson, VP and GM, Emerging Businesses Group, Arm. "Arm Kigen solutions deliver secure identity in cellular IoT applications for both device makers and service providers, enabling innovative new solutions like this from Sprint as we drive towards a world of a trillion connected devices."
