Mimosa Networks, the global technology enabler in wireless broadband solutions, has announced that Sonic Telecoms, a subsidiary of the HeroTel group, has selected the company’s fiber-fast wireless solutions for its new “Fusion Fibre” network blanketing key and underserved areas of Cape Town.
Founded in 2010, the South African service provider offers a suite of high-speed wireless and fiber services to residential and business customers. With the introduction of its new “Fusion Fibre” service based on Mimosa’s wireless broadband solutions, Sonic customers are now seeing aggregate speeds of up to 300 Mbps and decreased installation times.
“Fusion Fibre” is Sonic’s Fiber-to-the-Tower (FTTT) model designed to compete directly with Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) services by offering high-speed broadband over short distance wireless links from a nearby tower to the subscriber. The service allows clients to experience fiber speeds, at a similar price point, but delivered wirelessly and installed within days, not months.
“Deploying Mimosa’s world-first commercially viable 5G solution for broadband access has been a game changer for our business,” said James Wilkinson, CEO of Sonic Telecoms. “We are delivering both residential and business broadband services with tiered packages that exceed customer expectations of price, quality of service and customer support.”
Based on the initial success of the new service, Sonic intends to replicate and expand its business to additional underserved areas in the city where FTTH is not feasible. “We have seen great enthusiasm for our new service,” said Wilkinson. “The flexible, future-proofed Mimosa solutions will enable us to effectively scale our networks while continuing to bring the fastest speeds to our customers.”
“Mimosa’s wireless broadband solutions are a rapid, cost-effective and scalable platform for delivering fiber-fast speeds and the ultimate broadband experience to subscribers,” said John Colvin, Mimosa’s SVP of Global Field Operations. “We look forward to working closely with Sonic, and other innovative teams like them, in their aggressive plans to accelerate residential and business services deployments around the world.”
