Small cells are a critical piece of Verizon’s network plan – both for expanding our 4G LTE footprint in highly urbanized environments, like Naval Base San Diego, and our 5G network of tomorrow.

Both Naval Base Coronado and Naval Base San Diego are among the first naval small-cell installations.

Naval Base San Diego is home to a growing number of warships, logistical support platforms, research and auxiliary vessels. Each Command on base drives the mission to deliver the highest standard of support and quality of life services for all personnel and their families.

“Having reliable, secure connectivity is critical for Navy personnel at Naval Base San Diego, but it’s also essential for military families living on base and visitors to the base,” said Capt Roy Love, Commanding Officer, Naval Base San Diego. “Installing small cells on base improves our current coverage, quality of life and lays the groundwork for our future.”

This new infrastructure will increase connectivity across the base. Whether providing best-in-class ship maintenance and modernization, operational training, force protection, or fleet and family services, mobility and IoT solutions connect people, data and systems in real-time.

The new installation and partnership delivers on many smart installation challenges, including urban development surrounding the installation, intelligent tracking and management of assets, force protection and enhanced pier capability to power critical mission and services.

“With decades of being a world-class provider of communication and mission critical services for national security and military communications, Verizon is uniquely positioned to partner with the Navy to build a network infrastructure that meets their needs,” said Mike Maiorana, senior vice president, public sector sales, Verizon. “This investment further solidifies Verizon’s commitment to the mission needs of the Navy through the development and execution of 4G LTE small cells on base.”

It’s important to build with the future in mind, and densified 4G LTE small cells help make these bases future-ready by providing an infrastructure that is secure, reliable and agile, enabling dynamic operations. Verizon plans to implement this approach on other bases.
