After smashing Australia’s 5G speed record, Optus is set to deliver even faster 5G with the expansion of its mmWave deployment. mmWave is a technology that is tipped to be critical in delivering a major technological leap across the globe.

Awarded the rights to purchase mmWave AWL licences by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) today, Optus plan to trial the technology across 15 locations in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth andCanberra.

Once deployed, Optus will focus on testing mmWave’s massive throughput and low latency to see how this can be best harnessed for Optus’ consumer customers using 5G in the home. Optus Enterprise will also push the boundaries of mmWave to see how its customers can leverage the benefits to deliver sophisticated and market disruptive solutions that will shape the way society lives, works and plays.

“We’ve hit the road hard with 5G and in a short time have delivered an incredible, multi-award winning product for our customers - but we’re only just getting started. It’s important to us that we continue to lead the way with innovating for 5G and access to additional mmWave spectrum allows us to push and stretch the capabilities of the technology, ultimately delivering our customers with 5G speeds that will facilitate a sharper, more connected future,” said Lambo Kanagaratnam, Optus Managing Director Networks.

“Optus already holds the commercial 5G speed record in Australia and with the high bandwidth and low latency offered by mmWave, our customers can expect blisteringly fast multi-gigabit speeds once mmWave rolls out commercially throughout the next year.”

“mmWave will be the catalyst for the next great wave of technology innovations, many of which do not even exist yet, and at Optus we are excited to be at the forefront of achieving technological breakthroughs that we believe will benefit Australians.”

Working together with key technology partners, Optus will showcase the many benefits of mmWave over the coming months. Optus has already been trialling mmWave in four locations in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane for the last five months clocking peak speeds of over 4Gbps at our Optus Sydney Campus test site this month.
