Bharti Airtel partners Government of AP to Drive Mobile Digital Literacy initiative – E Shakti

Bharti Airtel Limited, the third largest mobile services provider globally with operations in 20 countries across Asia and Africa, has partnered with the Government of Andhra Pradesh for a mobile literacy digital mission in collaboration with SERP.

As part of this, the company rolled out ‘E-Shakti’, an initiative to build mobile internet awareness and literacy among the women of Andhra Pradesh. The initiative was launched today by the Hon'ble Chief Minister, Government of Andhra Pradesh, N. Chandrababu Naidu at a ceremony held to launch Rural Inclusive Growth Projects in Vijayawada.

Commenting on the launch of e-shakti, Hon'ble Chief Minister, Government of Andhra Pradesh, N. Chandrababu Naidu said “Connecting the community and its members to the world through the Internet is becoming increasingly essential for community development and social progress. e-shakti will be an ecosystem of digital literacy awareness, education and training that will help the women folk of the state of Andhra Pradesh to take a lead in the global digital economy and help us shape a technologically empowered society. I am happy that Airtel and SERP have come forward with this noble initiative in an effort to empower women by making them digitally literate”.

Speaking on the occasion, Venkatesh Vijayraghavan, Chief Executive Officer, Andhra Pradesh & Telangana, Bharti Airtel Ltd said, “Internet has the potential to transform the society into a strong, prosperous & progressive ecosystem. The increased adoption of internet amongst women of Andhra Pradesh would help bridge a digital divide as they connect & access a wide range of information keeping pace with the latest happening around them. The digitally empowered women would thus prove to be a strong foundation for the forward-marching state of Andhra Pradesh. We are honored to collaborate with the Government of Andhra Pradesh and together march towards the vision of a Digitized India.”

Commenting on the launch, S. Solomon Arokiaraj, IAS CEO – Society for Elimination of Rural Poverty, AP said, “It is our aim to economically empower the 90 Lakh SHG members in the state. We firmly believe that the Internet, with its market opportunities, awareness, and inherent equity offers a great platform for the SHG members to connect to peers across the world, to buyers and sellers and of course empower our members through readily accessible information.”

The training aims at empowering the women with useful knowledge on internet which would make them adopt and use internet in their daily lives leading into a digitally inclusive society. The State Government has identified the girl students from Government schools and colleges and women employees of various Government departments as the beneficiaries of ‘E-Shakti’ initiative. The 1st phase of the initiative will be conducted across 2 Districts of Andhra Pradesh – Vijayawada and Vishakapatnam.

The training would include elementary knowledge pertaining to internet, email usage, browsers, YouTube, IRCTC, State Government portals and mobile apps and other apps of daily use including social media. It also throws light on the various ways to access internet and the devices required for the same. The training would be conducted in Telugu and would be aided by explanatory videos. Each session would be attended by 70-90 members.
