The first commercial 5G network in the world goes live today in portions of Sacramento, as well as Houston, Indianapolis, and Los Angeles. Installations of Verizon 5G Home begin this morning for “First on 5G” members in Sacramento.

Built on the Verizon-led open 5G TF network standard, Verizon 5G Home is the next generation of home broadband internet service that provides super-fast Wi-Fi.

“We were able to make Sacramento one of our first 5G cities because Mayor Darrell Steinberg and city leaders embraced innovation and developed a strategic vision for how 5G could be a platform for the larger Sacramento technology ecosystem,” said Jonathan LeCompte, Pacific Market president for Verizon. “We believe this vision will pay off big for the city, attracting new investment, businesses and next generation services for residents.”

Sacramento worked proactively with Verizon for the past year to install small cells on more than 200 utilities poles and street lights. City leaders recognize the ultimate impact of high-speed 5G as it goes beyond home broadband service. 5G will attract additional investment, expand digital access for underserved communities and increase the city’s appeal as a place to test autonomous vehicles and other 5G-dependent innovations. In fact, the recently announced Aggie Square innovation campus – located in Sacramento and a joint project between the city and the University of California, Davis – is already supporting development of the technologies that will change how residents live, work, and play.

“This is a significant day in Sacramento,” said Mayor Steinberg. “When cities like ours partner with innovative businesses, investment follows. Not only has Verizon invested heavily to bring the latest network technology to our city, but they are partnering with us to focus investments on equity and economic opportunity for all neighborhoods.”

Maria MacGunigal, the city’s Chief Information Officer, added, “We have shown we can build the infrastructure for companies to come here and deliver new products that will improve the lives of our residents. The arrival of 5G will change the technology landscape in Sacramento forever.”
