Jio Phone: a Story of Sticky Terms and Conditions

New details on Jio Phone terms and conditions are now emerging and giving critical details on how the company is trying to create sticky customer relationships.

Critical detail – Jio Phone warranty is for one year period only
Critical detail – the Jio Phone refund will be provided only in a 3-month window
Critical detail – Reliance Retail has the ability to track the location and record voices of the users

There is no doubt that even before its actual availability – Jio Phone is able to create a lot of hype in the market, however the company did not disclose the full terms and conditions of its usage till just about now.

The revealed terms and conditions announced by the company earlier this week are enough to reduce the excitement of its fan base. Jio Phone comes with a lot of sticky conditions, for instance as the mandatory recharges of INR 1,500 or more per year, and charges on returning Jio Phone before the three-year lock-in period is over.

As per the announced conditions – customers will have to pay from their pocket over and above the INR 1,500 refundable fee already paid at the time of delivery in case they want to return the handset within a year of buying it in the form of taxes on the INR 1,500 early return charge.

Jio Phone Refund

As per the conditions – the best way to get your money refunded is to use the handset actively for 36 months. On the other hand, the company says that the customers only have a 3-month window to handover their Jio Phone unit in order to claim the return. The company says that Jio Phone has to be returned by the recipient “on or after the expiry of thirty six months but before the expiry of thirty nine months from the date of first issue” of the Jio Phone.

Jio Phone will be a SIM-locked phone, meaning it is locked to the Jio Network and assigned to a fixed number. The company has further mentioned that it “may, solely at its discretion, allow the use of the JioPhone with any other compatible network from time to time.”

As per the conditions – if a customer is not able to return the handset to the company in this 3-month window after the 3-year period is over, the INR 1,500 refundable sum will be forfeited.

Jio Phone warranty

Jio Phone carries a warranty of 1 year from the date of delivery for the handset, and six months on the charger. However this warranty will be voided if the handset’s seal, serial number code or date code has been removed, defaced or altered, or if it has been subjected to modifications like rooting, reverse engineering, unlocking, jail-breaking.

Jio Phone privacy policy

Reliance Retail (RRL), which is selling Jio Phone, will have access to the device’s “precise geo-location and other information related to your location on a regular basis through Bluetooth and Wi-Fi signals, calendar entries etc.
According to the company,” This information can be used to “provide location-related notifications or information you request,” the company says. The location settings on the phone must be turned on for this data collection, and “RRL or location service providers may request that you enable the location settings.” But these are quite normal conditions and used across an array of application vendors including Google.

Resale of Jio Phone

As per the conditions – users cannot sell, lease, transfer or assign the Jio Phone purchased in their name to someone else. It is important to note that this would prevent grey market sales of the device. And hence, only the customer who originally purchases the device – can use it for the whole of 36 months time.
